Barney's Version leads the Genies with 11 nods, including Pic, Actor (Paul Giamatti) and Actress (Rosamund Pike) |
The Canadian Genie Awards will be handed out this Thursday. While I’m quite eager to do a full discussion of the nominees, as well as offering my predictions for the winners, it sadly dawned on me that, well, I can’t. (I’ll explain that later.) Instead of offering analysis by category, I propose three wishes for the Genies, should I happen to find a magic lamp on the streets of Ottawa this week.
Wish #3: That we don’t lose to Denmark.

Incendies |
One of my favourite performances of 2010 was Tracy Wright’s heartbreaking performance as Vic, the fading rocker from Trigger. Wright faces some stiff competition from Trigger co-star Molly Parker, although it wouldn’t surprise me if even Parker were among those who voted for Wright. Also standing alongside the Trigger girls are Lubna Azabel for Incendies and Rosamund Pike for Barney’s Version, both of whom could benefit from the admiration for their films. Either would be a worthy choice, too: I’d have enthusiastically thrown my support to Pike’s endearing performance as Miriam had she been nominated in the supporting category instead. Wright, however, gives a performance that eclipses the others in range and power, and it’s hard to imagine anybody seeing the film and not voting for her. Wright’s win would provide one of the most touching moments of the ceremony, as the tale of the cast and crew rallying together to film her last performance in Trigger is among the most noteworthy Canadian film stories of 2010. A posthumous win for Wright, though, would hardly be a bid at sentimentality – quite simply, her performance merits the Genie, and the award would be a fitting tribute both to Wright and to the collective efforts behind Trigger.
Wish #1: That I actually get to see all of the nominated films!

Les amours imaginaires |
The Genie Awards air this Thursday at 8pm on CBC. Unfortunately, school commitments will prevent me from watching the show live, although I’ll certainly have lots to say about the winners. Hopefully some unexpected names will be called out, and I’ll find myself among many other Canadian moviegoers asking that these films receive a stronger release! In the meantime, I’ll find myself a seat at the bar in the Chateau Laurier and keep an eye out for celebrities… or someone who can give me a job!

★I'll take a stab at predicting these, although after my Oscar predictions, we know that this is just for entertainment purposes!
