Ingrid Veninger and daughter Hallie Switzer (left) in i am a good person... |
There's a really exciting film event in Ottawa this week, so it's too bad that I've already booked the week to be in Toronto for the CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival. Anyways, one of the CFC alum, Ingrid Veninger, will be presenting some of her work at the Canadian Film Institute, including her newest film i am a good person/ i am a bad person. (I missed the film at TIFF and had really wanted to see it, too.) The event should prove enlightening for anyone who wants to see the small, personal type of filmmaking that that has long been the core of Canadian filmmaking. (Hence the title, Intimacies.) A Q&A with Miss Veninger should interest Canadian film fans because she is arguably the reigning queen of 'do-it-yourself' filmmaking in Canada: it would be great to hear her perspectives on the potential for innovative filmmakers when the Canadian film industry is undergoing so much change.
From the CFI:
The remarkable career of Ingrid Veninger arches across all aspects of independent filmmaking in Canada. She has acted in, produced, edited, written and directed dozens of key films for more than three decades.
Born in Bratislava, Slovakia, Ingrid Veninger has worked extensively in film, television and theatre since 1978. She has been working in the film and television industry for over 20 years, beginning as a teen actor on the CBC television series, AIRWAVES. In addition to over 50 acting credits working alongside Meryl Streep, Gena Rowlands, Holly Hunter and others, she has collaborated with Canada’s most established and emerging filmmakers, including Atom Egoyan, Peter Mettler, Garine Torossian, and Charles Officer. A graduate of Norman Jewison’s Canadian Film Centre, Ingrid created pUNK FILMS INC. in 2005 to create artist driven features, with a 'nothing is impossible' manifesto.Ingrid Veninger’s work as a writer-director often probes the nature and complexities of intimacy: between lovers, families, friends, and, in an important sense, audiences and images. Her cinematic explorations of intimacy, rooted in a playfully subversive use of documentary-based realist aesthetics, are stylish, insightful, and unflinchingly honest assessments of how we treat one another. The Canadian Film Institute is pleased to present this retrospective of one of Canada’s most dynamic, perceptive, and prolific film talents, Ingrid Veninger.
