DiverCiné Brings Francophone Cinema to Ottawa

La Pirogue opens and closes DiverCiné 2013

Francophones in the Ottawa area can see films in their native tongue when the annual DiverCiné festival returns March 8th to March 17th. DiverCiné brings films from other French-speaking nations to Ottawa in a week-long celebration of film and culture. The event is organized by the Embassy of France to Canada and the Department of Canadian Heritage, in partnership with the Canadian Film Institute and the ByTowne Cinema. “The DiverCiné festival offers us once more an opportunity to pay homage to the talent and the creativity of filmmakers in Canada and in the other countries of the Francophonie,” says French Ambassador Philippe Zeller. “For the 11th year in a row, Canadian Heritage and the Embassy of France have come together around DiverCiné to celebrate the cultural diversity of all the French-speaking countries of the world through cinema.” Films at DiverCiné represent Francophone cinema from all corners of the globe with films from Canada and Europe on the programme alongside offerings from Africa and Asia.

This year, DiverCiné includes eleven Ottawa premieres of high-profile films from festivals like Berlin, Cannes, and Toronto. Among the films to screen are also some competitors from this year’s Oscar race for Best Foreign Language Film, including Canada’s nominee Rebelle. Rebelle is largely considered the front-runner for Best Picture at this weekend’s Canadian Screen Awards. Ottawans also have their first chance to see one of the films that was a finalist to be Canada’s submission for the Oscar race: Rafaël Ouellet’s acclaimed festival hit Camion. Also included in the DiverCiné line-up is Switzerland’s acclaimed entry Sister, which made the January shortlist.

The festival is bookended by Ottawa premieres of the Senegalese film La Pirogue, which competed in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. La Pirogue opens the festival with a screening in its original Wolof and French soundtrack with French subtitles. The film also closes the festival with a screening that includes English subtitles to accompany the original dialogue.

This year’s DiverCiné includes a greater number of films with English subtitles than in previous years. It’s a welcome change that ensures these films can open a bigger window to Francophone cinema, but can also be appreciated by as large an audience as possible. Last year, for example, included the only Ottawa screenings of acclaimed films like the Dardenne Brothers’ A gamin au vélo (The Kid with a Bike) or the Moroccan entry Omar m’a tué (Omar Killed Me) in French without English subtitles. Not all screenings include subtitles, so please make sure to consult the programme before the screening. Or, better yet, rafraîchir votre français!
