'Louis Cyr', 'Gabrielle' Lead Quebec Jutra Nominations

Gabrielle
The nominations were announced today for Quebec’s Jutra Awards (Les prix Jutras), which honour the best in Québécois cinema. Louis Cyr dominated the competition with ten nominations and a prize for top box office, while Gabrielle, Canada’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, received an impressive nine nominations. Particularly notable is the Jutra committee’s acknowledgement of Archambault in the categories for Best Director and Best Screenplay, as the Gabrielle director was egregiously snubbed in both categories in the Canadian Screen Awards nominations released earlier this month. Also scoring considerably better here than at the Canadian Screen Awards is Denis Côté’s acclaimed art house hit Vic + Flo Saw a Bear, which earned five Jutra nominations after being shut out altogether by the CSAs. (I’m especially thrilled by that Best Supporting Actress nomination for Marie Brassard, who made my list of the Top Ten Performances of 2013.) Also sitting strong are CSA nominated short films The End of Pinky and Gloria Victoria, which are competiting in a sturdy selection of animated films. Notably absent from the list, however, is festival favourite Sarah Prefers to Run, which now has a pair of goose eggs after being equally passed over by the Screenies. Sarah star Sophie Desmarais, however, was nominated for her performance in Le démantèlement, which is a top competitor at both award shows.

Tom at the Farm
Also absent is a film that came second for the most nominations overall at the Canadian Screen Awards: Xavier Dolan’s Tom at the Farm. Tom is listed solely in competition for a prize honouring the film most celebrated outside Quebec. Dolan fans needn’t worry that the Quebec Wunderkind was slighted, though, for Tom at the Farm won’t be eligible until next year, as it hits theatres in March and the Jutras require feature films to screen for at least one week in the calendar year in order to qualify for awards. (However, Dolan fans should note that frequent Dolan collaborator Monia Chokri earned a nomination for her short film An Extraordinary Person.) Tom at the Farm’s eight-nomination disparity between the Canadian Screen Awards and the Jutras demonstrates how Quebec is going about honouring their films in the correct way. While there is no doubting the merit of Tom at the Farm’s award potential, it simply hasn’t played yet; however, the Canadian Screen Awards allow films to strategize by choosing to submit for competition either in their year of festival release or in their year of theatrical release. This rule allowed Tom at the Farm and fellow March release Enemy to dominate the Canadian Screen Awards, along with other films such as The F Word, The Grand Seduction, and Maïna, which are slated for release later this year and have yet to be seen by audiences outside the festival circuit
