'Movie 43' Wins Tight Razzie Race

Hugh Jackman in Movie 43
The award season of 2013 has been a tight race and it seems the Golden Raspberries were no exception! The Golden Raspberries, aka The Razzies, take a moment to honour the “berry worst” in Hollywood self-indulgence as our finest stars spend half a year giving awards to themselves. The Razzie were so competitive this year that even nominees Adam Sandler, the Meryl Streep of the Razzies, went home empty handed. Ditto M. Night Shyamalan, whose After Earth seem poised to continue his astounding track record as a Razzie punching bag.

It was a photo finish, but the critically reviled Movie 43 took top honours and “won” the Razzies for Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay. 43 was an early Razzie favourite when it premiered to near unanimous pans last January. (I’ll admit that I gave it a generous 2.5 stars, which is the same rating I gave The Book Thief.) The star-studded anthology film Movie 43 makes Razzie history by honouring a whopping 13 directors, including Peter Farrelly, Brett Ratner, and Elizabeth Banks. Movie 43 tied the family blunder After Earth, which earned three Razzies for Worst Lead Actor (Jaden Smith), Worst Supporting Actor (Will Smith), and Worst Screen Combo with the Razzies giving Will and Jaden the gong for being "stranded on Planet Nepotism." The latter prize was a true upset since the entire cast of Movie 43 posed stiff competition for the Family Smith.
