Gear up, Oscar junkies and Canadian film fans! Xavier Dolan’s
Mommy just got a
very Oscar friendly release date of September 19. The
film’s Quebec distributor, Les Films Séville, announced the date today. The
film will open in Quebec on Sept 19, which probably means that a
North American premiere at TIFF is inevitable if the film wants to add to its
Cannes buzz and Jury Prize. Dates for the rest of Canada have yet to be announced
from partner distributor eOne Films. The Academy has yet to release its
qualifying dates for the upcoming Oscar race, but last year’s contest required
films to open in their native country by September 30, 2013.
Dolan
previously repped Canada in the 2009 race for Best Foreign Language Film with
his breakout debut
I Killed My Mother
and he’s easily the frontrunner since few major Quebecois filmmakers have
offerings on the horizon (both Jean-Marc Vallée and Philippe Falardeau have
Hollywood films coming out with
Wild
and
The Good Lie, respectively, both
of which star Reese Witherspoon) and with Canada’s Oscar-friendly production house micro_scope unlikely to compete with
Tu dors Nicole, which had a strong reception at Cannes, but nothing
quite in the league of acclaim for
Mommy. Denys Arcand's
An Eye for Beauty also seems unlikely to enter the race given the mixed/disappointing reviews it received when it opened last month. As always, though, check back closer to TIFF to keep an eye on Canada in the
Oscar race!
From Les
Festival. Le film met en
vedette Anne Dorval, Antoine Olivier Pilon et Suzanne Clément.
