'Mommy' Leads 2015 Canadian Screen Award Nominations

Mommy leads the Canadian Screen Award nominations for film with 13, followed by Maps to the Stars with 11. Events will be celebrated with Canadian Screen Week, which runs in Toronto from Feb. 23 - Mar. 1 and the Academy invites fan to participate in the new Fanzone website. Nominations were deliberated by over 400 jurors in over 100 categories across film, TV, and digital media and announced by Cara Gee (Empire of Dirt) and Jared Keeso (Godzilla). The top nominated show (for the second year in a row) is "Orphan Black" with 13 nominations.

I'm quite happy with the nominations overall. The three best films--Mommy, Maps, and Tu Dors Nicole--came on very strong, while some worthwhile performances like Michael Murphy in Fall and Sandrine Bisson in 1987 got some love, although I am surprised that Miraculum received no acting nominations (but some of its cast is repped elsewhere) and that Felix and Meira and Corbo isn't present, although the latter must be waiting until next year. The shorts nominations are especially good, with films such as Day 40, Soif, and Migration among the animated nominees and with Jutra and Seth's Dominion repping the short docs. The feature documentary nominations have the curious absence of Monsoon--not even a cinematography nomination?--in favour of the crowdpleaser Marinoni. I'm happy to see a cinematography shout out for Everything Will Be and an editing nom for Super Duper Alice Cooper (both well deserved).

Oh, and that VFX nomination for Wet Bum? So random, but how fun would that be if it trumped Pompeii???
