Canada's Rachel McAdam landed a SAG nomination for Spotlight

Spotlight MVP Rachel McAdams was the film's lone nominee in this morning's nominations for the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Spotlight earned a nomination for Best Ensemble Cast, which it is heavily favoured to win, but none of its many worthy male actors like Michael Keaton or Mark Ruffalo made the cut. Still, it's nice to see McAdams' strong work recognized. She was one of two Canadian actors nominated this morning in the film categories, for Room's Jacob Tremblay edged out the Spotlight guys for his heartbreaking performance in the Canadian-Irish co-production Room.


Room landed a nomination for Best Actress frontrunner Brie Larson, who was one of the few favourites to make the cut with SAG, as did Saoirse Ronan for Canuck co-pro Brooklyn, which didn't land an Ensemble nod as expected. Sarah Silverman was a big surpise for I Smile Back, as was Beasts of No Nation, which features only one recognizable name with Idris Elba, in the Ensemble category. Youth was by all regards hosed, as the ensemble drama failed to earn nominations for Jane Fonda, Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, and the cast's collective performance. Instead, SAG surprised with ensemble nominations for The Big Short, Straight Outta Compton, and Trumbo, which leads the nominations with a Best Actor nom for Bryan Cranston and a surprise Best Supporting Actress nomination for Helen Mirren, also nom'd for her lead performance in Woman in Gold. Major shut-outs for The Martian, Joy, Suffragette, and others shake up the race a little more in its early stages.
