'The Shape of Water' Leads Online Film Critics Society Nominations

Sally Hawkins stars in The Shape of Water
Fox Searchlight Pictures
Guillermo del Toro's mesmerizing fantasy romance The Shape of Water leads the 2017 nominations for the Online Film Critics Society Awards. The film starring Sally Hawkins as a mute cleaning woman who falls in love with an amphibian man has eight nominations including Best Picture, Best Director for del Toro, and Best Actress for Hawkins. Coming in second with six nominations apiece are Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name, Jordan Peele's Get Out, and Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird.

The nominations feature a mix of presumed Oscar frontrunners including Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri (five noms including Best Picture), Dunkirk (four noms including Best Picture), The Post (Best Ensemble), and I, Tonya, which scored a trio of nominations for Best Actress (Margot Robbie), Best Supporting Actress (Allison Janney), and Best Film Editing (Tatiana S. Riegel). The nominees include some unconventional choices to add some variety to the echo chamber of award season, like Best Picture nominations for A Ghost Story and mother!, the latter of which this blog recently dubbed the worst film of 2017.

Two categories feature six nominees due to ties: Best Ensemble and Best Foreign Language Film, which includes a number of favourites recently snubbed from the Oscar shortlist like Angelina Jolie's First They Killed My Father and Robin Campillo's BPM (Beats Per Minute). On the Canadian front, The Breadwinner is in the running for Best Animated Feature, while Roger Deakins nabbed a nom for lensing Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049.
