Sally Hawkins stars in Maudie Mongrel Media |
Maudie wasn't only one film bringing the luck o' the Irish to the Screenies tonight. Co-production The Breadwinner also made an impressive haul winning four Screenies including Best Adapted Screenplay for Anita Doron's wonderful take on the book by Deborah Ellis.
The Screenies generally fared well in a swift broadcast. The only major groaner the loss of Brigitte Poupart in the Best Supporting Actress category for her riveting work in Les affamés to Bahar Nouhian's good performance in Ava. Not exactly in the same league, those performances...
Catherine Bainbridge's Rumble swept the theatrical documentary honours winning all three categories. On the TV side of things, Maron Harron and Sarah Polley's Alias Grace cleaned up. Between Maudie, Breadwinner, Grace, and Rumble, as well as short doc Take a Walk on the Wild Side by Lisa Rideout and Sadaf Foroughi's Ava, it was an incredible night for films directed by women.
